From the Heart - Chapter President Val Pristera

Just back from the CPCU Annual Meeting in beautiful (and warm!) San Diego, California.  It was my first Annual Meeting in 28 years!  In Washington D.C., in 1990, I had hair and a waistline!

Comparing the two meetings, I marvel at how many changes our industry has seen.  The topics today weren't even imagined in 1990:

  • Autonomous Vehicles
  • Diversity and Inclusion
  • Cyber Security
  • Concussions and CTE:  Liability Ramifications
  • Working Remotely
  • Generation Vexed
  • Blockchain

What hadn't changed was seeing lots of insurance people all interested in learning and growing as CPCUs.  I ran into many friends, some who were probably there at my first annual meeting.

Most exciting were the New Designees and our Chicago NWS Chapter was well-represented.  When a stadium has to be rented for the conferment ceremony, you know the Society has come a long, long way.

We're ending 2018 as a Chapter with so much to be thankful for - - our members, most of all!  I would say now is the time to give back to others, but we seem to do that throughout the year!

One way we give back is with the Terese Peuvion Grant.  Terese was a cherished member of our chapter and her passing in 2016 still saddens us.  In her honor (how she would hate that!), we have established a grant that pays Society/Chapter dues and meeting attendance fees (when required) for one of our 2018 New Designees who is either between opportunities or works for a company that does not cover their costs to belong.  All we request is a written statement as to what the CPCU means to them and how they plan to serve the Chapter in the coming year to be submitted to the Board of Directors.

Three meetings remain:

  • October 25 at Cooper's Hawk Restaurant & Winery (on Algonquin Road in Arlington Heights)
  • November 13 at Countyline Tavern (on Lake-Cook Road in Buffalo Grove)
  • December 6 at Moretti's Ristorante & Pizzeria (on Higgins Road in Hoffman Estates) - - our annual Holiday event where admission is one unwrapped toy!

I've enjoyed my time as President but I look forward to what we still have in store for 2018!
